“I’m a Chef Today!”

May 12, 2024

With summer vacation almost upon us, we held our last Cookin’ Up Breakfast event of the school year at Sandy Miller Elementary School on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

Our culinary partner the Alpha Eta Chapter of Beta Pi Sigma Sorority. On the plate were oranges, yogurt, pork, chicken, and grits. It was a fun way to try a Southern breakfast staple that is rich in nutrients, most notably iron.

Our friends at Guy Fieri Foundation and players on the UNLV football team volunteered to help serve breakfast to these kiddos. The kids were impressed and kept asking which famous chefs they knew… “Do you know Guy Fieri?” “Do you know Gordon Ramsay?” “Are there any chefs here today?” and the volunteers would point to our ACF Chefs in the room. The kids thought it was so cool.

A male volunteer from Guy Fieri Foundation and a female teacher hand out milk to students at an elementary school.

One little girl even told one of the volunteers “My dad is going to be so proud of me. I’m a chef today!” Yes, yes you are! Our hope is by educating the kids in the classroom, and showing them how they can incorporate healthy eating in their breakfast at the Cookin’ Up Breakfast events, we will foster a life-long love of cooking and eating healthy.

As they say, it takes a village to raise a child. We are grateful to our village. From all our volunteers, culinary partners, teachers, and school staff to Anderson Dairy who provides milk at every breakfast, and Hospitality Culinaire who blends up delicious smoothies that are always a favorite, we couldn’t make this initiative happen without your support!

Thank you for another wonderful, successful school year! We look forward to getting back in the cafeteria in the Fall! If you want to join in on the fun, contact us to learn about culinary partner and volunteer opportunities for next year!
