Kids Cook
October 2, 2020
A program that is executed over the summer months has a new twist this year, kids teaching kids. Since COVID-19 has caused the cancelation of many things this year, Chefs for Kids wants to ensure that the children we work with are still getting the education and enrichment they deserve. This is why Kids Cook transitioned to virtual lessons. Programming started in the summer and continues through the 2020/21 school year.
The program, which the Chefs for Kids teachers deliver through the University of Nevada, Reno’s Extension, is usually done at the cooperative’s kitchen as well as community centers. Now being virtual, it is being delivered to nine community centers and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada.
Lessons include knife skills, measuring, how to follow a recipe, food safety and a variety of cooking techniques to create delicious and nutritious snacks and meals. Check them out!
Lesson 1 – Flavored Waters
Lesson 2 – Healthy Popsicles
Lesson 3 – A Corny Summer
Each online class also includes a Kahoot link. Kahoot is a game-based learning platform that engages students with a fast-paced and fun content review. The game may be played on a computer or in a computer lab at any time or it can be printed for the kids to fill out.
We ask that you help us continue providing these types of free programs to children in the community, by making a donation for nutrition education here. Your support will keep our teachers inspiring healthy attitudes in a year that absolutely needs positive reinforcement.
