Oh Crepe!

May 29, 2022

A big thanks goes out to Chef Anthony and the team at The Cosmopolitan who stepped up to the plate to sponsor our latest breakfast at Wendell Williams Elementary School. The kids received a free healthy breakfast consisting of a ham, cheese and egg breakfast burrito wrapped in a whole grain tortilla, a fruit cup, and (surprise!) blueberry crepes! The crepes turned out a bit messy as a few kids accidentally dropped them, sending blueberry sauce everywhere! The chaos all added to the fun of the morning though, and nobody was harmed (except maybe the blueberries!)

We also want to give a special shout out to our partner Jamba Juice, who was on-site serving strawberry and banana smoothies to go along with the breakfast. The students, and staff, greatly enjoyed these treats!

This breakfast was bittersweet for us as it marked our last Cookin’ Up Breakfast program for the 2021-2022 school year. We were just getting back into the schools after the shut down, and now Summer hits. While many kids enjoy the glory of Summer vacation, the sad reality is that many of the students are going home to pantries filled with cheap, easy to make, foods that are not nutritious…. We all remember that precious blue box of Macaroni & Cheese, our favorite flavor of Ramen Noodles, and who can forget the cans of Spaghettios! Many of us had these foods as guilty pleasures/treats in our childhood, but for some kids, it’s their only source of food.

Our teachers have been working hard all year to educate our students on how they can pick a better snack by incorporating affordable fruits and vegetables into their diet. While we know many of our kids are not going to pass up the pleasures of that blue box, we hope that they will also ask mom & dad to buy some of the produce we’ve introduced them to such as blueberries, asparagus, blood orange, etc.

Just because Summer is here, doesn’t mean our work stops though. We will be busy these next few months ramping up for the 2022-2023 school year, and we need your help! There will be at least 12 breakfasts to plan, and we need sponsors and volunteers for each one. If you have a business that’s interested in providing financial sponsorship, or cooking/preparing and/or serving the meals, we want to talk to you! Please email us at sponsorship@chefsforkids.org.

Can’t sponsor or volunteer? You can still help by making a donation in any amount, every little bit helps.
