Chefs for Kids was serving up smiles at our recent Cookin’ Up Breakfast event at Halle Hewetson Elementary School — and what a morning it was! From the moment students walked in, their excitement was contagious. As trays filled with colorful and delicious food made their way down the line, one student exclaimed, “Oh, that looks yummy!” That’s exactly the kind of joy our volunteer chefs aim to bring to every school we visit.

Before the students even step into the cafeteria, our chefs start the morning by serving breakfast to the hardworking teachers and staff. After all, they’re the ones fueling young minds every single day — and they deserve a little fuel of their own! It’s our way of showing appreciation to those who dedicate their time, energy, and hearts to supporting students year-round. A hot, homemade breakfast is the perfect way to say thank you and keep them energized for the day ahead.

Our talented chefs from MGM Grand, New York New York, and Excalibur prepared a breakfast that was as nourishing as it was fun: turkey sausage sliders, fruit cups, coin-cut tater tots, and crowd-favorite waffle skewers — all topped off with a sweet oatmeal berry cookie for dessert. To complete the meal, students enjoyed a refreshing strawberry banana smoothie and an ice-cold carton of milk, thanks to our generous partners at Jamba Juice and Anderson Dairy.

Behind every Cookin’ Up Breakfast is a mission — to ensure that kids start their day with a nutritious meal that fuels both their bodies and their minds. Studies show that children who eat a healthy breakfast are more focused, energized, and ready to learn. For many of the students we serve, this may be one of the most balanced meals, or maybe even the only meal, they’ll have all day, and it’s why our chefs go the extra mile to make every dish both healthy and delicious.
One of those dedicated volunteers is Chef Norris Kelly, Executive Chef, who has been part of the Cookin’ Up Breakfast program for more than 12 years. He shared, “It’s really great giving back to the community, and helping out kids that are at risk. It’s important for them to get nutritious meals… we want to put our best foot forward and make sure we have the best options for them.” His words capture the heart of what Chefs for Kids is all about — chefs using their talents to nourish and uplift children across Southern Nevada.
