More Than Art: Building Bravery at the Table

At Chefs for Kids, we know healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring—it can be downright fun! That’s exactly what happened at our Produce Picasso event, where kids turned fresh fruits and veggies into edible works of art while learning the power of eating the rainbow. From colorful nutrition lessons to hands-on creativity (and a little taste-testing along the way), the day was packed with laughter, discovery, and plenty of delicious moments.

The day kicked off with a colorful mini-nutrition lesson led by our amazing educator, Ms. Momii. Kids learned that eating fruits and veggies in every color of the rainbow fuels different parts of the body—reds help your heart and memory, greens keep your teeth and bones strong, and purples boost brain power. As each color was introduced, little hands shot up in the air to shout out their favorite fruits and veggies. The excitement was contagious!

Then came the really fun part—playing with food! In the kitchen, the kids became true “Produce Picassos,” crafting sailboats, lions, marine life, and even caterpillars out of fresh fruits and vegetables. Of course, quality control was important—so plenty of taste-testing happened along the way 😉.

Parents couldn’t help but smile watching the fun unfold. One mom shared,

“My son has a thing with textures. For the teachers to get him to put anything in his mouth is giving me goosebumps. He tried spinach and celery.”

Moments like this are why this program matters. At home, kids might resist trying new foods. But when you mix in creativity, a little friendly peer pressure, and a lot of fun—suddenly, new flavors aren’t so scary anymore. That’s the heart of Produce Picasso: helping kids overcome food fears and discover how delicious healthy eating can be.

We’re so grateful to Timothy S.Y. Lam Foundation for making this event possible. Special thanks to Charity Joy Mills for joining in the fun, and to Councilwoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick along with Chef Hans Weding from University of Nevada, Reno Extension (and Chefs for Kids Board Member), who ended the day by cooking up a surprise lunch for the kids and their families.✨ At Chefs for Kids, we believe every child deserves the chance to explore, learn, and thrive through healthy eating. If you want to see more programs like Produce Picasso, please consider making a donation today. Together, we can keep fueling little bodies—and big imaginations!
